Doctor's Standing Orders

FIRST AID FOR MINOR INJURIES

2025-2026 School Year

August 1, 2025

Small cuts, abrasions, or scratches - Cleanse with soap and water and cover with sterile
dressing.


Slight burns - Apply cool compress.


Severe burns - Treated by first aid measures only. Notify parent/guardian and transport to ER.


Epistaxis (Nosebleed) - Pressure to nasal bridge. May apply ice if necessary.


Possible fracture of any extremity - Immobilize. A splint may be applied and should reach and
immobilize the joint and below suspected fracture. Apply ice to the area.


Foreign bodies in eye - Remove the foreign body with a cotton applicator soaked in saline or
isopto solution, or wash the eye with saline solution. If the foreign body cannot be removed by
the above method, patch the eye and send the child home immediately to be taken to the family
physician or ER.


Bee sting/insect bites - *Check list for history of allergy* If no known allergies, apply cold
compress and notify parents of any unusual symptoms.


Cold Sores/chapped lips - Apply Vaseline.


Sore throat - Gargle with salt water.


SEVERE ASTHMA ATTACK/RESPIRATORY DISTRESS - administer Oxygen 2-4 L via n/c until
EMS arrives.


ANAPHYLAXIS - Administer student's Epi-Pen or stock Epi-Pen. Call 911, notify parents.


TICK REMOVAL - After tick removal, wash with soap and water and apply band-aid.
The tick shall: 1. Be preserved for the parent or guardian of the student to send to the Tick
Research Lab of Pennsylvania for testing if they choose to do so. The school entity shall provide
information to the parent or guardian on how to send the tick to the Tick Research Lab of
Pennsylvania; or 2. Be sent directly by the school entity to the Tick Research Lab of
Pennsylvania for testing using the free basic panel tick test.
