Epilepsy Management

The Connellsville Area School District is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for students with epilepsy or seizure disorders. Students with a diagnosed seizure disorder are supported through individualized planning and evidence-based health practices to ensure access to education while prioritizing student safety.

Each student with epilepsy must have a current Seizure Action Plan and physician’s orders on file with the school nurse. These medical documents guide school staff in recognizing seizure activity, responding appropriately, and providing any prescribed emergency medication.

The District’s certified school nurses oversee seizure management in collaboration with families, healthcare providers, and school staff. Nurses provide training and guidance to designated staff members as appropriate and ensure that health plans are implemented consistently across school settings.

Seizure management is addressed through the student’s Individualized Health Plan (IHP) and, when applicable, integrated into a Section 504 Plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP) to support access to instruction and participation in school activities.

The District complies with Pennsylvania Act 84, which requires school entities to adopt seizure management policies and ensure appropriate training and planning for students with seizure disorders.

The District follows established medical standards and guidance, including recommendations from organizations such as the Epilepsy Foundation, to promote best practices in seizure recognition, first aid, and emergency response.

Families are encouraged to communicate any changes in their child’s medical condition, medications, or seizure patterns promptly so plans can be updated.

Questions regarding epilepsy or seizure management should be directed to the school nurse or building administrator.
