School Counselors

A school counselor helps students with academic, social, and emotional development through individual and group counseling, skill-building lessons, and crisis intervention. They also collaborate with teachers and families, assist with college and career planning, and analyze student data to improve school-wide initiatives and support student success. 

Academic Support

• Assist students in developing academic plans and setting goals. 
• Help students improve study habits, time management, and other learning skills. 
• Identify and address issues, like absenteeism, that negatively affect performance. 
• Help with course selection and postsecondary education planning, including college applications, trade schools, or military service. 

Social and Emotional Development

• Provide a safe space for students to discuss personal issues, including social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
• Help students develop social skills and manage emotions.
• Mediate conflicts between students and teachers.
• Conduct or facilitate programs on topics like bullying and drug abuse.
• Provide crisis intervention for students in immediate distress. 

Career Guidance

• Help students assess their interests and abilities through aptitude tests and interviews. 
• Guide students in planning for their post-graduation careers. 
• Present options for educational and vocational plans after high school. 

Collaboration and advocacy

• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to address student issues and support their success. 
• Act as an advocate for students in meetings, such as individual education plan (IEP) meetings. 
• Refer students and families to outside resources for additional support when needed.
