CONNELLSVILLE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT
Special Education Office
Due to the growing understanding of the importance of mental health in regards to educational outcomes and overall individual success, the Connellsville Area School District will be incorporating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into the curriculum.
Basic components of SEL include, but are not limited to, empathy, recognizing and managing feelings, independence, listening to and respecting others, kindness, cooperation, thoughtful choices, and problem-solving.
Research shows that assisting students in creating and improving these skills can lead to increases in self esteem, academic success, ability to cope with emotional distress, and engagement within their school community. Research has also shown that implementation of SEL curriculums can lead to decreases in the likelihood of students engaging in substance use, negative conduct within the school, and involvement with the criminal justice system.
Connellsville Area School District will be working to systematically integrate these components into each of our school buildings and their classrooms. Our hope is that you and your child(ren) will find these skills to be valuable within your home as well. We are happy to provide support and answer any questions about the curriculum that you or your child may have.
