Coaching Certifications (Must Be Renewed Annually)
CardiacWise:
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in young athletes. CardiacWise is a free online educational program designed to educate coaches, parents, athletes on the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest in athletes. This course is approximately 15 minutes in length. Individuals who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.
This course covers the following topics:
- Understanding Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- Causes of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Athletes
- Signs and Symptoms Cardiac-Related Conditions in Athletes
- Strategies for Preventing Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Once you have completed the quiz, print out your certificate and provide it to the athletic department to put on file.
ConcussionWise:
Sport Safety International has partnered with the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society to offer the ConcussionWise series of educational programs. These programs have been peer-reviewed and are consistent with the latest science and practical applications regarding the prevention and management of concussion.
As a coach, you are responsible for the health and safety of your athletes, and it’s likely that you are aware of the recent focus on concussions in sports. It is important for coaches to understand concussion basics, as well as steps to prevent and properly care for concussions when they occur. ConcussionWise™ PRO is a free online course developed specifically for Pennsylvania coaches by Sport Safety International. At the completion of the course, learners will receive a completion certificate.
Once you have completed the course, print out your certificate and provide it to the athletic department to put on file.
HeatWise (For Fall Sports Only):
HeatWise is an online program designed to educate coaches and others involved in sports and physical activity on the prevention and management of exertional heat illness. This course is approximately 20 minutes in length. Individuals who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion. This course covers the following topics:
- Prevention of dehydration
- Recognition of dehydration
- Prevention of exertional heat illness
- Recognizing exertional heat illness
- Immediate treatment/management of exertional heat illness
Once completed with the course, print out your certificate and turn it into the athletic office to put on file.
PDE Clearances:
In accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Education regulations, all public school employees who have direct contact with children must have current (not more than one (1) year old) Pennsylvania State Criminal Background (Act 34), Child Abuse (Act 151), and Federal Criminal History Record (Act 114, Fingerprinting) clearances.
